Good news and bad news for Germany on injury front

Germany got some good news and some bad news before their playoff clash with England as it was announced that midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will return to the squad after taking part in a full-training session 24-hours before the game.

The midfielder was replaced in Germany’s 1-0 win over Ghana as he suffered a thigh injury and it was feared that he might miss the match against England. It’s not sure if he’ll start the game on the pitch or on the substitute’s bench though and the final decision won’t be made until just prior to the kick off. Defender Jerome Boateng, who was also doubtful for the game due to a muscle strain, also trained with the squad and looks to be ready to dress.

The bad news for the Germans was that Brazilian-born striker Cacau will be forced to miss the match because of an injury. The 29-year-old, who played in Germany’s first three games, has an abdominal muscle injury, which he suffered during training on Friday. It’s hoped that Cacau will recover in time for Germany’s next match in the tournament, if there is one.

In the England camp, fears of Wayne Rooney missing the game because of an ankle injury have been dismissed by the English FA and they state that he’s ready to play after being substituted in the 72nd minute in England’s 1-0 win over Slovenia. Rooney damaged some ankle ligaments back in March and it was feared he reinjured them.

Centre-back Ledley King returned to training after suffering a groin injury in England’s first group game against the USA. King has been quite injury prone over the last few years and his spot on the team was taken by Jamie Carragher until he was suspended with two yellow cards, and then Matthew Upson. It’s unsure who’ll start against Germany, but the feeling is manager Fabio Capello may stick with Upson.
